The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two Transportation Planning Specialists (TPS3) to serve as Megaprograms Cultural Resources Specialists within the WSDOT Megaprograms Division. This division includes the multi-billion-dollar Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program (AWV), SR 520 Bridge Replacement Program (SR 520), I-405 Corridor Program, and SR 509 and SR 167 Gateway Programs. The top candidates will provide archaeological monitoring and fieldwork assistance, act as technical specialists on cultural resources issues, and support Washington State Ferries with regulatory compliance related to cultural resources.

What to Expect

Travel is an expectation of this position. The incumbent may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis to participate in meetings, conduct field visits, or attend trainings. Travel may include occasional overnight stays.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Megaprograms Cultural Resources Specialist will:

• Provide archaeological monitoring and fieldwork assistance to projects requiring on-site support.
• Conduct cultural resources field surveys in accordance with regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate consultant support and conduct archaeological monitoring of construction activities in compliance with project commitments and plans.
• Act as technical specialist on cultural resources issues and support the Megaprograms Cultural Resources Lead in carrying out compliance responsibilities delegated to WSDOT by the Federal Highway Administration and as required by federal, state, and agency regulations.
• Research site records and surveys at Dept. of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP).
• Support Washington State Ferries with regulatory compliance related to cultural resources.
• Coordinate monthly tribal consultation reporting on behalf of Megaprograms projects.
  Assist the Megaprograms Environmental Manager with contract management/invoice tracking.

Qualifications

• To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field with specialized training in archeological research including an archaeological field school course.
• At least 12 months of supervised field and analytic experience in archaeology.
• Valid driver’s license.
• 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (current with refresher) or ability to acquire within 6 months of hire.
• Experience with archaeological monitoring during construction.
• Ability to work in uneven and steep terrain, in highway right-of-way, and in all weather conditions normal to the State of Washington.
• Ability to bend and reach to excavate soil tests and retrieve artifacts, samples, and equipment, and manipulate 25 lbs.
• Ability to operate a vehicle and travel to and from field visits and meetings by car with occasional overnight stays.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

• Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field
• Skills in ArcGIS including basic functions such as the ability to manage simple data sets and generate maps, maintain, and update database systems.
• Photography and working familiarity with image process software such as Photoshop for inclusion in technical report.
