Research Archaeologist/State Historical Society of North Dakota Full Time

The Research Archaeologist will serve as a statewide specialist administering archaeological sites through the State Historical Society’s Cultural Resource Inventory (CRI) databases, providing access, instruction, and maintenance for the North Dakota Cultural Resource Survey (NDCRS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) database. The position will provide guidance and generate information for research about, and review of, archaeological and historical topics. The Research Archaeologist reports to the State Archaeologist, who reports to the Director of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

The agency is re-envisioning its mission, culture, and organizational structure to better align with our strategic priorities and development of team talent. As the experts in Great Plains Archaeology and as the leaders in technological advancements in archaeological methods, this position will also be responsible for projects aimed at furthering the understanding of prehistory and history of North Dakota.

Duties and Tasks

• Complete review of ND Cultural Resource Survey (NDCRS) information for accuracy and context, and maintain the paper, electronic, and GIS systems.
• Be an advocate and provide expertise, advice, and guidance in conversations and presentations with the general public, researchers, and constituents across the state and country.
• Conduct on-site archaeological research (survey-inventory, testing, and monitoring) of sites and generate reports covering the work as specified by project description and appropriate regulation.
• The position will work with various partners and complex databases and will require a high level of organizational skills.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, or other closely related field.
• Demonstrate at least two (2) years of full-time professional work experience.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated oral, written, and researching skills.
• High level of interpersonal and negotiating skills.
• Experience with GIS.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional field and analytic experience in both prehistoric and historical archaeology.
• Previous research and knowledge of the Northern Plains, North Dakota in particular.
• Experience working with federal and North Dakota state laws pertaining to cultural resources management.
• Experience in electronic database management, particularly GIS systems. Candidates with knowledge of programming languages such as Python and Visual Basic are encourage to apply.
