Archaeological Principal Investigator/Brice Environmental Services Full Time

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Archaeological Principal Investigator will work as an integral member of Brice’s rapidly growing cultural resources practice. Primary responsibilities include leading and performing archaeological field survey, monitoring, testing, and excavation projects, data analysis, report preparation, and supporting Section 106 compliance for a range of federal and private clients. The position would be a mix of field and office work. Personal initiative, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills are essential to complete job duties with minimal guidance. Assignments are deadline-driven so must be able to set priorities, take ownership of projects, work efficiently and provide a consistent level of high quality in a high-pressure environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Serve as principal investigator in charge of independently directing and performing archaeological survey, monitoring, testing, and excavation.
• Analysis, data-processing, and report preparation as lead or sole author.
• Section 106 NHPA reviews, NRHP eligibility evaluations, and compliance support.
• NEPA cultural resource impact analysis.
• Client management.
• Regulatory and Tribal consultation.
• Project management.
• Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
• Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

• Ability to independently conduct survey, monitoring, testing, and excavation projects.
• Ability to work with Trimble GPS, ESRI GIS, and Microsoft suite software.
• Ability to work effectively alone or work well with others as part of a team.
• Ability to identify and analyze lithic and faunal artifacts, human remains, site features, and stratigraphy.
• Ability to work long days in challenging conditions (e.g., cold, inclement weather).
• Ability to safely navigate rugged terrain, and hike long distances with heavy loads.
• Ability to prepare high-quality reports as lead or sole author.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
• Knowledge of the NHPA, NEPA, and other laws, regulations, executive orders, and agency rules governing historic preservation and cultural resource management.
• Ability and skills in the practical application of cultural resource management

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate Degree (M.A. or Ph.D.) in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline.
• 3-5+ years of professional archaeological experience.
• Alaska and Pacific NW experience preferred.
• Specialized experience with lithic or faunal artifacts, geoarchaeology, or human remains preferred.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Brice Environmental has a fast-paced multi-tasking office environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance.  At times, work is performed outside of the office at indoor and outdoor job sites.  Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes, and occasional overtime for immediate field support or bid processing may be necessary.
