Geospatial Technician Temporary

Job Summary:

The geospatial technician assists with the collection of spatial date in the field, organizes those data for display on cartographic maps and analysis in a GIS platform, and prepares cartographic maps and map graphics for inclusion in SRI reports. This is a professional entry-level position requiring the ability to learn, take direction, and work under the supervision of higher-level geospatial staff to meet general geospatial and cartographic needs on a project-to-project basis.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Implement outlined procedures for the recording and management of geospatial data
• Assist GIS Analysts and other CAGST staff to perform quality-assurance and data review for geospatial and attribute data in both electronic and hard-copy formats
• Clean and attribute geospatial data
• Assist GIS Analysts and other CAGST staff to georeference and digitize cartographic data in ArcGIS and other geospatial software from both digital and hard-copy data sources
• Prepare high-quality maps and other cartographic products in accordance with provided standards and guidelines • Collect geospatial data in the field using various geospatial data-collection instruments including (but not limited to) GNSS receivers and data collectors, RTK systems, total stations, and photographic cameras
• Record field attribute data in both electronic and paper formats

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or upper-level undergraduate training and classroom experience in anthropology, archaeology, geography, GIS or a related discipline with an emphasis in geospatial technologies, OR a GIS certificate
• Experience in field mapping and data collection using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers, RTK, and/or total station
• Experience manipulating and editing spatial data in current or recent versions of the ArcGIS software package (ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Desktop 10.3 or above)
• Knowledge of basic cartographic and geospatial principles

Qualifications Preferred:

• 1 year related experience • Substantive classroom or professional training in GIS principles and best practices
• Past archaeological field experience (i.e., survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring), as well as completion of an archaeological field school
• Ability to use MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

• The geospatial analyst may work in both field and office settings, depending on the particular needs of a given project. Physical effort in the field may involve:
• Ability to work outdoors in various and challenging types of weather
• Sufficient physical endurance to conduct mapping tasks in remote and challenging environments, and the ability to carry mapping equipment while conducting fieldwork.
• Ability to hike in rough terrain and move in different positions to safely accomplish tasks
• Ability to work in project sites that may increase risk of exposure to biological hazards
• Ability to work weekends and more than 40 hours per week when needed
• Ability to travel out of town for work, often on short notice and for extended periods of time.

Compensation:

The hourly rate for this project ranges between $22.00 and $27.00 per hour.
Daily food allowance, when applicable, is based on the project location and will be offered at a rate of at least $50.00 per day (no receipts required). Also, single-occupancy hotel accommodations will be provided.
Wages for work on other SRI projects may vary and are based on individual qualifications and experience.
