Ethnoscience, Inc. is a cultural resource management firm established in 1980 and based in Billings, Montana. We are seeking a staff supervisor archaeologist for field work primarily in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The position is a permanent, full-time, salaried position.

-FY2025 Starting Salary: $56,160 per year ($27.00/hour)

-Overtime [when available and authorized] is $40.50/hour

The candidate can expect to conduct or supervise all stages of archaeological and historic research including file searches, survey, testing and evaluation, data recovery, and construction monitoring. Project report writing is a major component of the position, so proficient writing skills are a plus.

The candidate will need to relocate to Billings, MT. Moving expenses are not reimbursed.

Qualified candidates must have:

• Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a related field
• At least 16 months of archaeological field experience with a professional cultural resource management firm:
• Ability to walk up to 10 miles a day, carry heavy loads for short distances, or excavate three 1×1 m x 10 cm levels in clay loam per day, and spend lengthy periods standing in a stooped position while screening.
• Experience with NRHP evaluation of historic and archaeological sites.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well with others and be an initiative-taking team leader.
• A valid driver’s license.
• Ability to supervise both small- and large-scale projects.
• Ability to operate GPS units and navigate using USGS maps.
• Experience in Northern Plains archaeology and familiarity with stone features (circles, arcs, alignments, cairns, etc.) is preferred.

Fieldwork:

• Single occupancy rooms on most projects, which is 99% of the time. There have been a few times in the past during periods such as hunting season where motel rooms in small communities are in short supply and we have had to double up on the motel rooms, but those events are rare.
• The FY2025 per diem paid for all projects is no-receipts per diem of $62.00/day and is paid in cash at the beginning of each work session.
• On Montana state highway projects, the n0-receipts FY2025 cash per diem paid for first and last days is $51 per day, otherwise it is $62.00/day in between the first and last days.
• Most longer projects tend to be 10 days on and 4 days off.
• Between February and April/May 2025 there will be historical research projects to be completed that will involve deed record searches and trips to the Montana Historical Society archives and local historical societies.
• A survey/testing project will start in early June 2025 and is anticipated to last up to 20 weeks and will be 6 days on and 1 day off. Overtime will be paid for the supervisor’s position at a rate of $40.50/hour. The number of overtime hours will vary week by week. Motel lodging will be provided on days off.
• A monitoring project will start in early June 2025 and is anticipated to last up to 10 weeks and will be 5 days on and 2 days off. Overtime of up to 10 hours per week will be paid for the supervisor’s position at a rate of $40.50/hour. Motel lodging will be provided on days off.
• Several of our projects in 2025 will involve Tribal Cultural Specialists from one or more of the 12 tribes in Montana. These TCSes will provide their worldview of archaeological sites and Traditional Cultural Properties encountered on the various cultural resource surveys we have scheduled. The project supervisor will be respectful at all times of these worldviews and will document them and incorporate them in the final project reports.
