The technician will have an interest, coursework, and/or work experience in archeology, anthropology, history, architecture, historic preservation, archival and library science, GIS, or similarly relevant field. The necessary skills needed to perform well in this position are as follows:
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills;
• Good communication abilities, both written and oral;
• An interest in cultural history and/or archeology and the management of information pertaining to these fields;
• Knowledge of architectural history and historic landscapes;
• Database management experience; and
• Cultural history research and writing skillsThe NPS will collaborate with Great Basin Institute in the hiring process to assist in determining the best candidates. The intern’s work will include a significant amount of fieldwork assessing buildings, structure, landscapes and landscape features to provide Federal CRIS database entry updates.
Other duties of the position include conducting research and compiling archival information on historic peoples, buildings, and cultural landscapes. Incorporate into accessible database for use in research, compliance, planning, tribal consultation, interpretation and/or similar tasks that support resource stewardship within the Branch of History, Architecture and Landscapes, as well as the Branch of Anthropology and Archeology:
• Cultural Landscape Inventory: work closely with Historical Architect to create a comprehensive inventory of cultural landscape documents;
• Document chronological histories of historic districts, buildings, structures, and landscapes (primarily through photographs, construction documents, and reports) in order to expedite compliance and project review;
• National Register Properties: Create a comprehensive list of National Register Properties and determine nomination status;
• Historic Structure Reports/ Cultural Landscape Reports: Create a comprehensive inventory of reports to include context, condition assessment, treatment. Work with staff to identify gaps in the archives and document to inform managers and decision makers; and
• Divisional and Archival Research: Seek older files on historic properties related to current and future projectsIn addition to the above, the research associate will support ongoing research and fieldwork in collaboration with staff of the Branch of Anthropology and Archeology as needed. This position will provide professional and personal development opportunities and the research associate will be encouraged to collaborate and learn from colleagues within the cultural resources program.
