Position summary:
Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with Phase I and Phase II archaeological investigations. Initial work includes 10-12 weeks on a Phase II project with work beginning in April. Additional work may be available after this project is complete. A bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field and prior experience in all phases of archaeological investigation are required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States. Successful applicants will be considered for anticipated long-term projects in the region. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
Lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided. Mileage to and from the project, project area, and drive time will also be compensated. Rate based on experience, and number of hours per week will be based on project workload.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The qualified candidate for this position will assist Project and Senior Archaeologists during Phase I-II field work in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and surrounding states. The candidate will aid in identifying any pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during STP or test unit excavation. Preference will be given to candidates that will be available as on-call employees through the fall with the potential for continuous work based on available contracts.

Required Skills
Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Candidates should also have good organizational skills, communication skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new tasks.
Required Experience
Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school.
Preferred Experience
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
Work is performed within a general office environment 5% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
