The Archeological Specialist reporting location is at 4477 Pacific Coast Highway, San Diego, California 92110.
This position will work under direction of the supervision of the District Services Manager at San Diego Coast District (SDCD) and will assist the SDCD Associate State Archaeologist in duties relevant to the Cultural Program. The Archaeological Specialist will participate in cultural resources management activities throughout SDCD. The Archaeological Specialist will work closely with other resource specialists and facilities personnel in the district and Southern Service Center.
The SDCD oversees 16 State Parks/Beaches from Carlsbad State Beach to the southwest corner of the continental United States at Border Field State Park. In addition to these coastal sites, we also look after Old Town San Diego State Historic Park and San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park.
The SDCD is currently seeking a seasonal/part-time archaeologist. This is a temporary 1,500-hours-per-year position. Duties of the position include site survey and recordation, construction monitoring, preparation of site record forms, processing excavated collections, cataloging artifacts, data entry and filing, assistance in map production using ArcMap, report writing, in-depth research, assisting with tribal consultations and providing general assistance to SDCD cultural resource staff.
Applicants should have archaeological work experience (Southern California archaeological work experience is desirable). A college degree with an Anthropology/Archaeology major is desirable. Applicants must have completed an archaeological field school or field class. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a valid work visa. A valid California driver’s license is required.
Applicants on public assistance under the CalWORKS Program/Temporary Assistance for Needy Families TANF will be given priority consideration per California Government Code 19063-19063.8. If you receive state public assistance, you must identify your status on the comments area of the application. A letter from the County Welfare department verifying CalWORKs/TANF status must be submitted with your application. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Working knowledge of standard professional archaeological field and laboratory methods for both pre-contact and historic-period sites.
- Experience with various computer applications (word/excel processing and database programs).
- Experience in completing standard site recordation forms (DPR523, etc.).
- Ability to identify sites and artifacts and evaluate various archaeological site types.
- Ability to work in primitive, outdoor conditions. Must be able to lift 30lbs and walk/hike at least a mile.
- The personality to work amicably with one’s co-workers in both the office and field environments.
