Description
History Nebraska is seeking a collaborative and innovative collections management leader to serve as Collections Manager. As a member of the collections team and a people-leader, this position is accountable for:

overseeing and coordinating physical control of History Nebraska’s collections, including 3D objects, archaeology, photographs and audiovisual materials, manuscripts, government records, and library materials;
managing collections storage areas and the movement, care, and preservation of collections;
implementing security measures;
coordinating accessioning processes and documentation;
and managing related special projects.

The Collections Manager will work independently and with colleagues and external stakeholders to manage projects and further partnerships, exhibits, and funding benefiting these collections. History Nebraska has adopted an “Active Collections” approach to collections use and management, and is focused on making collections available to our audiences in new ways.
Pay range is $21.672 - $32.51 hourly, commensurate with experience and preferred qualifications, within budgetary restraints, if approved.

Examples of Work

Develops and implements plans, workflows, and goals appropriate to established objectives and strategic priorities.
Ensures that collections care, use, and security meets a high level of professional standards, ethics, and practices in all collections activities and use.
Leads and participates in general collections management activities such as inventories, movement, housing, care, handling, storage upgrades.
Manages collections storage facilities and access to them with the goal of safely and efficiently housing collections.
Coordinates integrated pest management and monitors/manages storage equipment and supplies.
Develops, manages, and participates in projects and programs that promote collections care and management, including preparing funding proposals, such as grant applications, and related reports.
Provides overall direction for placing, training, supervising, and motivating assigned staff, work studies, interns, and volunteers.
Communicates effectively with internal and external audiences, consulting with other historical organizations, and facilitating cross-departmental communication and cooperation.
Contributes to a positive work attitude and inclusive environment by working cooperatively with others and conducting oneself as a team player.
Performs other related duties as apparent or assigned. 

Qualifications / Requirements 
REQUIREMENTS:   Bachelor's degree in History or closely related field such as: Education, Museum Studies, Geography, or Anthropology AND two years of experience in museum curatorial work, developing and/or providing educational programs to K-12 students, or providing interpretive tours.
PREFERRED: Three or more years of practical collection experience in a museum, repository, or community organization, ideally as a registrar or with collections management duties. Thorough knowledge of standard museum/archives practices, including handling, storage, care and preservation, appraisal, acquisition, and cataloging. Knowledge of a variety of collection types and their physical and intellectual management requirements. Must be available for emergency response activities. Proficiency with databases and/or collections management systems. Demonstrated experience in project management. Experience with issues related to repatriation or deaccessioning collections. Active involvement in a professional association.
OTHER: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. Position requires occasional travel. Must possess a valid driver’s license, be able to provide independent authorized transportation and drive a state vehicle as necessary. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of modern collections management practices and standards, and federal and state laws and regulations relevant to the State Archives and Collections.
Ability to effectively supervise, direct, evaluate, and mentor professional staff, students, interns, and volunteers.
Flexibility, creativity, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to identify and achieve goals and objectives and meet multiple competing priorities.
Ability to adapt to and operate collections management software such as Past Perfect or ArchiveSpace, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Outlook.
Ability to communicate and work effectively and inclusively with diverse and varied people and groups in writing, by phone, and in person.
Strong organizational skills necessary to maintain electronic and paper documentation.
Basic knowledge of curatorial practices.
General knowledge of American history and ability and willingness to learn Nebraska history.
Demonstrated participation in learning or professional development opportunities that increased awareness of cultural competence/intelligence/agility.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to work both independently and as a member of a team.
Ability, flexibility, and willingness to occasionally work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to maintain electronic and written records and to complete assigned reports.
