JOB SUMMARY:  
The archaeologist will work as an integral part of Brice’s rapidly growing cultural resources team. Primary responsibilities are archaeological monitoring, survey and site testing, artifact analysis, and assisting report preparation. The position would be primarily field based, with options for laboratory and office work as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Pedestrian examination of the ground surface.
Site mapping and recording.
Monitoring mechanical excavations, project mobilization activities, and infrastructure removal.
Describing stratigraphy and preparing stratigraphic profiles.
Identifying and evaluating finds, including possible human remains.
Digging shovel test units.
Archaeological excavation.
Recording excavation units.
Paperwork and artifact processing.
Lithic and faunal analysis.
Supporting report preparation, and other follow-on tasks.
Clean and prepare survey and site testing area as needed, safely removing and properly disposing of debris and waste materials.
Follow all safety procedures, identify and report any hazards as observed for safety of personnel and equipment
Maintain a safe and clean job site with attention to detail to prevent hazards and to reduce personal exposure and potential spreading of hazardous contaminants
Store materials properly, picking up and removing all tools and equipment when not in use, and securing the job site on a daily basis
Perform any other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of using a computer and word processing software
Ability to work effectively alone or work well with others as part of a team.
Ability to identify and characterize lithic and faunal artifacts
Ability to identify human remains.
Ability to characterize and record site features and stratigraphy.
Ability to perform standard archaeological field excavation techniques.
Ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts.
Ability to work with GPS and GIS.
Ability to work long days in challenging conditions (e.g., cold, inclement weather)
Ability to safely navigate rugged terrain.
Ability to hike long distances with heavy loads.
Skill in documenting detailed notes
Skill communicating effectively both verbally and written

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s Degree or higher in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline
Minimum 2 years’ archaeological field experience, including monitoring, survey, and excavation.
Alaska experience preferred.
Experience with lithic and faunal artifacts, geoarchaeology, and human remains preferred.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

A blend of field assignments and office tasks.
The majority of the field work will occur during the summer/fall.
Outdoor conditions may be subject to changes in weather conditions and noise levels.
May require travel in aircraft, motor vehicles, ATVs and/or watercraft for periods of days to weeks, generally in remote locations.
Must be willing and able to travel and work long hours to support rigorous field schedules.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Potentially working at contaminated sites.
Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time, using hands/fingers requiring dexterity with good hand-eye coordination and motion control for handling equipment in the field.
Occasionally: crawling, climbing, reaching overhead, balancing, pushing or pulling, lifting/carrying 10-75 lbs., eye/hand coordination (foot), fine manipulation, discriminating colors, Inside: Hot/heat, cold, Hazards: chemical, sharp objects/tool, heavy machinery, dirty (soil), dry, fumes, gases, odors, dust, grease, oil, mud, moving mechanical parts, noise, wet/slippery floors/surfaces.
Continuously: close vision (clear at 20" or less), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up & down or to the left & right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances & spatial relationships), thinking analytically, using effective verbal communication, making decisions, examining/observing details.
Frequently: sitting, standing, walking, bending over, crouching, kneeling, talking, repetitive use of legs, grasping, lifting 10 lbs. or less, distance vision (clear at 20' or more), ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object in to sharp focus), using effective written communication, handling stress & emotions, concentrating on tasks, discriminating colors, remember details, adjusting to changes, Outside: Hot/cold temperatures, humid, working with others and working alone.
