Pay for Lakewood, CO is $91,753 - $119,280
Pay for Santa Fe, NM is $83,634 - $108,724
Duties

Designs, implements, and supervises multi-phased archeological projects at parks throughout the Intermountain Region. Directs archeological research projects from developing research designs, to planning and supervising field investigations, coordinating analyses, to authoring publishable completion reports.
Provides direct professional and programmatic support to parks, centers, and support offices. Serves as Regional ARPA Permit Coordinator, managing all aspects of permits for archeological investigations across the region. Serves as primary archeological advisor to multiple national park units throughout the region and assists parks with state and tribal engagement and consultation on archeological stewardship. Assists other regional cultural and natural resource programs on archeological issues.
Assists parks in compliance of federal historic preservation and archeological resource protection law, bureau policies, and guidance. Conducts reviews of park undertakings and directs archeological projects in support of Section 106 compliance. Provides assistance to park managers on the Archeological Resources Protection Act, the Native American Graves Protection and
Repatriation Act, the National Historic Preservation Act, NPS Management Policies and Guidance, and other key laws, policies, and guidance related to archeological stewardship.
Coordinates archeological agreements and contracts; collaborates with partners to develop projects and task agreements; develops scopes of work and cost estimates for complex multi-phased archeological projects.
Incorporates automatic data collection methods and GIS into archeological management for parks and programs. Incorporates geophysical investigations into archeological projects.

Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal civilian employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's
License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/23/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
AND*
meet the ADDITIONAL Specialized Experience in order to qualify for this position.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Archeologist, GS-0193:
A: Have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques); Archeological field school, provided a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; 
AND 
six semester hours of related course work in geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; 
AND 
Archeological field school.
OR
B: Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in related curriculum obtained at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school).
OR
C: Have a combination of education and experience that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate additional education or technical experience to total 4 years. This combination must have demonstrated that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study.
OR
D. Have four year of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher level archeologist be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
*AND*
Specialized Experience and/or Education: At the GS-12: Have at least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) ) specialized experience includes at least one full year of archeology or cultural resource management that has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. My experience is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-11 level in the Federal government. Examples of specialized experience for the GS-11 Archeologist focuses on archeological project work rather than programmatic responsibilities. This includes designing research, planning, directing, and completing inventories (often called surveys) and excavation projects; authoring technical reports; using GIS to prepare for field work document archeological resources, and to create geospatial data sets and maps after field work. Specialized experience also includes evaluating National Register of Historic Places eligibility for these resources; assessing effects of federal undertakings to them, and mitigating adverse effects through archeological studies. Experience also includes determining site condition and preparing damage assessments for archeological sites are found to have been looted. A GS-11 assists with state and tribal consultation and will evaluate and review external reports to ensure standards are met. Experience also include proficient use of service-wide databases.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
