About the Position
The Archaeology Collections Coordinator will have operational responsibility for the management and tracking of curated Section 106 collections and collections generated from the survey of Mississippi land, including daily oversite of the NAGPRA process, in accordance with the Agency's role in the identification, registration, protection, and distribution of information about archaeological sites in Mississippi. Additionally, the chosen candidate will be responsible for the daily management of archaeology staff, including performance reviews and scheduling. This position is part of the Archaeology Section and reports to the Chief Archaeologist. Key responsibilities for this role include daily oversite of Collections staff schedules; assisting the Chief Archaeologist on the development of Collections Policies and Procedures; serving as Liaison to Museums Collections Committee and exhibit development; daily oversite of NAGPRA repatriation initiatives; serving as intern coordinator for HP Archaeology sections; completing policy documents including curation fee schedules, tribal consultation, and research request procedures, and curation guidelines for external partners; preparing inventories of collections holdings and NAGPRA status for internal and external review; working with federal partners on Section 106 collection NAGPRA consultations; oversite of federal grant reporting and status; coordinating research requests for held collections, including tribal and agency consultation if warranted; and other duties as needed.
What you'll need to be Successful
Strong communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated supervisory experience as well as experience in laboratory analysis of archaeological materials from the Southeastern U.S, including conservation of materials, artifacts, and ecofacts, as well as experience in tribal consultation with regard to the NAGPRA and Section 106 processes and familiarity with Federal grant requirements and applications.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and 7+ years of experience. Hiring agency preferred qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in archaeology, anthropology, history or a related field (archaeology or anthropology preferred), archaeological field school, and at least seven years of experience in archaeology and/ or collections management.
