Description of Job
The Historic Resource Specialist position is accountable for assisting the State Historical Fund grant recipients and their contractors in achieving successful preservation projects. Projects include rehabilitation, preservation and restoration of historic buildings, historic structure assessments and the development of interpretive materials. This position serves as a preservation advocate and project manager for State Historical Fund grant projects and actively ensures the projects comply with The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation and the State Historical Fund rules and policies. This position is supervised by the State Historical Fund’s Historic Resource Specialist Manager. As the History Colorado State Historical Fund works to most effectively serve communities across the state, this position may have the opportunity to relocate to a remote office in the future after a minimum 12 month training period in Denver. The timing and physical office location would be determined through a coordinated and thoughtful effort between the Specialist and State Historical Fund leadership.
Duties include:
Project Support and Management
Provide project management and oversight of construction, planning, education, and interpretation grants, as well as assist with archaeological grants, to ensure the appropriate application of The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.
Visit sites and provide advice and guidance to State Historical Fund grant recipients and the project team regarding the implementation and oversight of grant projects to achieve successful results.
Interpret and apply The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
Manage assigned projects, including developing deliverables, monitoring project progress and coaching grant recipients to succeed.
Work with State Historical Fund engagement, contract staff, volunteers and interns.
Community Engagement and Application Services
Provide advice and guidance to the general public about State Historical Fund and History Colorado programs, procedures and policies and the use of The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.
Represent History Colorado and the State Historical Fund at public events, which may include travel and public speaking in front of large or small groups.
Conduct public presentations on application policies and procedures, The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and preservation and grant related topics.
Visit sites to discuss potential projects and applications
Advise potential grant applicants on building the project team and developing competitive applications.
Review draft applications and provide constructive criticism to grant applicants.
Reading, Scoring and Summarizing Grant Applications
Assist with the evaluation and selection process for competitive and non-competitive grant applications and provide professional comments.
Review, score and comment on grant applications according to State Historical Fund’s criteria and policies.
Evaluate the applications’ historic preservation merit, adequacy of project planning, scopes of work and budgets.
Summarize grant applications for committees and councils.
Professional Development
Continue professional development by attending conferences, reviewing basic historic preservation literature, maintaining active participation in allied organizations and sharing knowledge with professional colleagues

This position is required to be located in Denver, CO for 6-12 months and then may relocate to a remote office in another region in the state of Colorado.
This position requires independent travel (40-60%) of the time) throughout the state utilizing a State Fleet car, but use of a personal vehicle (mileage paid) may be required if the position relocates to a remote office.
A valid Colorado driver’s license must be obtained within thirty days of hire and maintained throughout the term of employment.
