What You Will Be Doing
The individual will work in the Review/Compliance Unit and will report to the unit's lead to review development or improvement projects that are federally and/or state licensed, funded, permitted, or on federal and/or state land for potential impacts to properties eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The position will draft written recommendations to the state/federal agencies on what action is necessary to avoid, minimize, or mitigate adverse effects to significant historic properties. The individual will represent the office in consultation meetings and provide technical assistance to the office, agency partners, consulting parties, and members of the public. The individual will also serve as Cultural Resource Liaison with the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. The position will be the point of contact for DOT&PF Cultural Resource Management staff and will review DOT&PF and FHWA projects for potential effects to historic properties. The position will also provide technical and planning assistance to DOT&PF staff through early project planning, reviewing survey scopes of work, and participating in environmental public meetings.

The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to “Develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska’s natural resources consistent with the public interest.” One of the Department of Natural Resources’ focus areas is to “Ensure sufficient data acquisition and assessment of land and resources to foster responsible and community development and public safety." The mission of the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation is to “provide outdoor recreation opportunities and conserve and interpret natural, cultural, and historic resources for the use, enjoyment, and welfare of the people.” The Office of History and Archaeology’s contribution to the Department’s mission is to provide an historic preservation program to encourage the preservation and protection of the historic, prehistoric and archaeological resources of Alaska. This position is part of the Office of History and Archaeology's core services to identify, document, evaluate, and protect historic sites and buildings through application of historic preservation guidelines, standards, and regulations to ensure state and federal actions take into account impacts to historic properties.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
The Office of History and Archaeology is within the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation. Its office is located in the Atwood Building in downtown Anchorage on the same floor as the Alaska State Parks' Director’s Office and the Design and Construction Section offices.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for a candidate that possesses the following position-specific competencies
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college in archaeology, or anthropology with course emphasis in archaeology, including or supplemented by two field seasons experience, of at least two months duration each, in archaeology site location, identification and excavation. One field season must have been as a team supervisor.
Substitution: Two years of professional archaeological research which included field experience, beyond the specified bachelor's degree, may be substituted for the required master's degree.
