Gray & Pape, a national and international cultural heritage management (CRM) firm, is seeking a Principal Investigator (PI) to join our History/Architecture practice in our Indianapolis, IN office. This role is full-time, regular status, and salaried exempt. The salary range for this position is $60,000-$72,000.
Summary of the Role:
The PI – History/Architecture is an architectural historian responsible for planning and directing historical research and narrative writing for compliance reports and providing historic preservation and CRM services to the satisfaction of client requirements and in accordance with professional and company standards and ethics. The PI is responsible for all aspects of fieldwork, report content, and preparation, National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations, preliminary evaluations of project effects, and CRM recommendations. The Architectural Historian PI is also responsible for ensuring that all other project personnel have sufficient experience to perform their required duties. An Architectural Historian PI may supervise other History/Architecture and/or archaeological staff on a project basis.
Key Duties:

Timely and cost-effective scoping, implementation, and completion of projects.
Development and tracking of project-specific budgets, personnel identification/assignments, and work schedules.
Development of research goals, field plans, and work products/deliverables on time and within budget.
Development of professional, resource-specific recommendations for the management of cultural resources, particularly aboveground cultural resources, using NRHP and other applicable criteria.
Responsible for coordination between project and company personnel and clients and client representatives.
Participates in public outreach and interface to include opportunities for educating the public on the importance of cultural resources and heritage management.
Assists Senior Managers, Senior Principal Investigators, and/or President identify new market sectors, clients, and preparing proposals.

Minimum Qualifications:

M.A./M.S. in History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, or a closely related field plus five (5) years of professional experience researching and evaluating aboveground cultural resources within the CRM environment. 
Expertise in historic architectural styles and types, and the application of the NRHP Criteria.
Excellent fieldwork skills including archival research, survey techniques, photo recordation, and mapping capabilities, including electronic techniques, and the ability to plan and direct others in these tasks.
Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate CRMs findings via oral and written means.
Basic understanding of GIS applications as applied to CRM.
Understanding of U.S. historic preservation and cultural resource management laws and requirements, especially Section 106.
Ability to plan and execute work within schedule and budget.
Competency in managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
A valid U.S. driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

M.A./M.S. in Architectural History.
Eight (8) years or more of professional experience researching and evaluating aboveground cultural resources within the CRM environment. 
Experience with Department of Transportation projects.
Three (3) years of supervisory and/or project management and/or program management experience in the CRM environment.
Three (3) years of experience working closely with U.S. Federal agencies and/or U.S. Federal properties.
Proficiency in utilizing GIS hardware and software as applied to CRM projects.
Proficiency with creating graphics and integrating them into reports, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
Experience preparing any of the following: historic structure reports, cultural landscape reports, cultural landscape inventories, and administrative histories. 

This position may require up to 40% travel. Frequently this travel is outside the local area and includes overnight stays.
