Position Summary:
The GIS Technician provides internal mapping and GIS services, map and graphics production, and technical support and training for right of way, title research, environmental planning, and cultural resources projects. The GIS technician conducts mapping and assists specialized fieldwork projects as the mapping and data specialist.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
GIS Technician does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Functions and Requirements:

Meet mapping and GIS needs for all phases of the project lifecycleconcept, planning, mobilization, fieldwork, data editing, data analysis, graphics production, digital and hardcopy deliverables, and project closeout/curation.
Conduct mapping fieldwork using a variety of methods, techniques, and instrumentation.
Develop maps, graphics, tables, and other products for fieldwork, reports, and presentations using ground-measured data, client data, public-domain GIS data, and digitized hand-drawn illustrations.
Create, develop, and maintain GIS, spatial, and attribute data to support project mapping needs.
Implement quality assurance and quality control protocols to ensure data precision, accuracy, completeness, and integrity.
Write document sections related to mapping, analytical, and GIS methodologies.
Provide technical training and on-going support, hardware and software, for non-technical field staff and office GIS end users.
Innovate project-specific strategies, workflows, and processes for specialized or unique projects.
Monitor, respond to, address, and follow up helpdesk support tickets for GIS service requests. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong drafting and cartographic skills.
Experience developing topographic, planimetric, thematic, and analytical maps from ground measurements and GIS data sources.
General land surveying and field-mapping background and competencies.
Computation of basic surveying and analytical mathematics: geometry, trigonometry, COGO calculations, and descriptive statistics.
Ability to implement contemporary, rigorous land surveying methods and techniques.
Ability to run, maintain, test, and troubleshoot a wide suite of surveying instrumentationconsumer-, GIS-, and survey-grade GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors/tablets, and associated equipment and accessories.
Experience with iPad, Android, and/or Windows field data collectors/tablets and various mapping and surveying applications/software.
High-level function within ESRI GIS productsArcGIS Pro, Spatial Analyst, Dashboards, Collector, and/or Survey123.
Ability to learn and work within standardized workflows, processes, data structures, and graphic styles.
User-level function with relational databases such as Access, Oracle, SQL, PostgreSQL, etc.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Responsible for time management and allocation of project resources to service simultaneous projects with variable priorities.
Ability to work within diverse, flexible teams as a mapping technical expert.
Ability to work independently, problem solve, and overcome technical and situational challenges.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact and collaborate with all levels of management, staff, clients, and consultants to enhance collaborative projects.

Travel:
The GIS technician may be required to travel for overnight and extended stays to support fieldwork with some projects requiring camping in remote locations.
Work Environment:
The GIS technician will work in indoor office settings and outdoor fieldwork environments in urban and remote locations. The position sometimes requires exposure to harsh elements of weather and terrain in desert and mountainous settings.
Qualifications for success
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree an applicable field of study (Anthropology, Archaeology, Geosciences, Heritage Management, Environmental Sciences, GIS, Cartography, Land Development, Engineering, or other) with complementary emphasis or training in GIS, cartography, or land surveying; OR
Specialized technical degree focused on the GIS, cartography, land surveying, and/or civil engineering trades with sufficient experience to demonstrate required competencies AND;
Two years of full-time professional employment in GIS, mapping, or cartography AND;
A valid drivers license. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of diverse professional experience in GIS, cartography, and/or land surveying.
Specialization in cultural resources, natural resources, and/or environmental sciences mapping.
Complementary skills in cultural, natural, or environmental resources management.
Experience with enterprise-level GIS, database, or web development.
Completion of ESRI GIS certifications and/or training programs.
Developed graphic design skills.
