Position: Field Archaeologist (Independent contractor)
Salary: Flat rate per project, $1800

Job Description Summary:
NewFields Environmental and Engineering, LLC is seeking a field archaeologist to assist in its Federal Communications Commission (FCC) compliance efforts on an as-needed basis. The field archaeologist will work as an independent contractor for NewFields and will be responsible for traveling to proposed telecommunications tower construction sites across the United States and performing pedestrian survey and/or shovel testing as required by various state historic preservation offices (SHPOs). The contractor will also assist NewFields’ Section 106 efforts by conducting background research and preparing technical reports for each project. The archaeological contractor will report to NewFields’ principal investigator for each project.
 
The successful candidate will have superior communication skills, attention to detail, the ability to work well with a geographically dispersed team, and to meet multiple, simultaneous deadlines. An employee in this position needs to be able to coordinate with project teams to accomplish specific objectives in a sometimes hectic environment.
 
Position Requirements:

Education and Qualification Requirement: An M.A. or higher in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field is required.

 
Experience Requirement:

The successful candidate must have minimum 2 years’ experience working in field archaeology
Be comfortable conducting survey work across the United States.
Candidates who meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards are highly preferred.
Software: Position requires applicant to have working knowledge of Microsoft Office© software including Word, Excel, and One Note and demonstrate aptitude to work with a variety of other spatial and data collection software used by NewFields.

 
Potential Travel: 
The field archaeologist is primarily a traveling position on an as-needed basis. The person in this role will work as an independent contractor for NewFields. The field archaeologist will be responsible for arranging their travel and accommodation for each project.
 
Job Location: 
Candidate may be based anywhere in the U.S.
 
Physical Demands: 
This position requires contractor to be able to walk extended distances on rough terrain during field investigations over extended periods, ability to dig and transport materials in often harsh environments with sometimes extreme temperatures and weather conditions, the ability to sit for long periods of time, and the ability to lift at least 40 lbs.
 
Essential Functions

Completion of surveys and/or excavations in sometimes harsh environments with extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
Writing archaeological reports that satisfy Section 106 compliance requirements for various SHPOs.
Assist Principal Archaeologist in completing technical reports by providing fieldwork documentation in a timely manner.
Prioritization of tasks and deliverable schedules for time sensitive scopes.
Communication with geographically dispersed team members.

 
Salary:
The field archaeologist would work as an independent contractor with NewFields at a flat rate of $1800 per project. Projects that require additional fieldwork will be billed at a higher rate.
