Our Atlanta-based archaeology unit is looking for a sharp, creative problem-solving Archaeologist 4 to join our environmental team in supporting the more than 30 VHB offices on the East Coast.
Responsibilities
Conduct Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III archaeological investigations and data recoveries
Write technical reports that assess archaeological site integrity and significance under Criterion D of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
Prepare appropriate field methodologies for archaeological survey
Lead field crews in conducting archaeological investigations
Record archaeological resources, gather field data, and assist in collecting remote sensing data
Prepare maps using the ESRI suite of software
Conduct archival and historical background research
Analyze artifacts and assist curation efforts
Coordinate regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and municipal agencies
Supervise and mentor junior staff
Support and build clientele
Provide support and technical assistance as needed
Qualifications
A Master’s Degree in anthropology or archaeology
Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) membership, or has the credentials necessary for enrollment
Qualifications that meet the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology
The ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, in inclement weather or rugged terrain
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
An organized approach while balancing multiple on-going tasks
The ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment
Determination and resiliency
5 or more years of professional experience in cultural resource management
A valid driver’s license
Ideal Skills and Qualifications
A clear understanding of the precontact and historical traditions of the southeastern US
Familiarity working with FHWA NEPA compliance and state Department of Transportations (DOT) requirements
Familiarity with NEPA, ARPA, NHPA, NAGPRA, Section 404 permitting, and state environmental compliance laws
Professional working knowledge of Section 106 of the NHRP and its applications
Experience working with cultural agreements and documentation
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS, and the ESRI suite of software
The ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
5 or more years of experience working in the southeastern US
