Duties

Receives advanced instruction designed to familiarize incumbent with functions and operations of the organization, and to provide additional experience in the practical application of established natural and/or cultural techniques and concepts.
Through independent study, developmental assignments, literature review, on-site studies, and fieldwork, the incumbent expands his/her knowledge about the natural and cultural resources of the park and the National Park Service and relate state and local park and institutions. For example, the incumbent may study the history of discipline-specific scientific thought, studies and theories applicable to a region or park unit; and participate in archeological field studies, geologic mapping, consultation with Native Americans, water quality investigations, etc. as appropriate.
Seeks training opportunities and educational activities that will increase his/her knowledge and understanding of the park's resources in the context of the natural environment or the historical and cultural setting.
In carrying out the principal day-to-day duties, incumbent is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the condition of the resources of the park. Observes or identifies park resources problems or potential problems that can be corrected or mitigated by immediate attention. With respect to more complex problem, incumbent recommends and/or may participate in the development and implementation of plans to address the problems. Some examples of the resources conservation and management tasks and/or developmental assignments of the incumbent include: compiles preservation documentation on prehistoric and historic architectural sites, including completion of pre-stabilization forms, architectural documentation, photographic documentation, mapping, materials and equipment lists, daily logs, and field notes for compilation into a yearly report.
Assisting in the design and implementation of multi-phased archeological projects involving documentary, archival, and collections research; field investigations (both survey and excavation); laboratory analysis of recovered data; and professional report writing.
Collecting field data contributing to the basic natural and cultural resources inventory to assess status and trends of resources condition. Identifying species, cultural object or sites, measures abundance or condition, environmental parameters, etc, using technical instruments, manuals, protocols, and knowledge of the resources. Measuring and reporting on impact and effectiveness of management actions that affect resources, such as ground disturbing development, visitor disturbance, and erosional processes etc.
Drafting workplans and implementation strategies. Using established methods and techniques accomplishes conventional restoration or mitigation actions, or participates as a member of a team accomplishing more complex projects. Projects typically include conservation of historic objects, archeological reconnaissance, oral histories, etc.
Investigating cultural sites, natural resources, historic scenes, and subjects not documented in park files to a level adequate to identify, protect or interpret them properly; assists in coordinating the work of visiting professionals from various NPS offices and professionals under contract in natural or cultural resources management disciplines.

Pathways participant agreement is required.
You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.
Occasional travel may be required
You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications
Conversion: Pathways Interns may be converted to a term or permanent position upon program completion. This is not automatic nor guaranteed; it is at the discretion of the employing office. To be eligible for conversion, an Intern must: (1) be converted within 120 days of successful degree completion; (2) be a U.S. citizen; (3) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Program while enrolled as a half/full-time degree/certificate-seeking student, or meet exception; (4) meet the qualification standards for the position to which converted; (5) receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the agency; and (6) meet agency-specific requirements, as specified in the Participant Agreement.
Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: knowledge of the cultural history of Hawaii, familiarity with Hawaiian language and cultural practices as they relate to historic preservation principles and practices, assisting with projects involving community partners and stakeholders, and using high-resolution GNSS digital mapping and photogrammetric techniques to document resources. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: 
Successful completion of at least two years of graduate level education or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree. To be qualifying, graduate study must have been in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field. 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study is considered to be equal to one full year of graduate education. You must include transcripts.
