This position is located in Joshua Tree National Park, in the Cultural Resources Branch.
Duties
Come be a part of the Joshua Tree National Park team! As an archeologist, you will work within the Cultural Resource Program as part of the Division of Science and Resource Stewardship (SRS). SRS values collaboration, innovation, science-based decision making, and perseverance.
Humans have occupied the area we now know as Joshua Tree National Park for at least 5,000 years. The first group known to inhabit the area was the Pinto Culture, followed by Native Americans including the Serrano, the Chemehuevi, and the Cahuilla .In the 1800s, cattlemen drove their cows into the area for the ample grass available at the time and built water impoundments for them. Miners dug tunnels through the earth looking for gold and made tracks across the desert with their trucks. Homesteaders began filing claims in the 1900s. They built cabins, dug wells, and planted crops. Everyone who has lived in this desert has left an imprint on the landscape. Archeology has a long history in the area, including early development of environmental archeology by Elizabeth Campbell.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
Complete the initial online assessment and USAHire Assessment, if required.
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
You may be required to occasionally travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the applicant cut-off is reached (which may be sooner than 07/25/2022).
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
Basic Requirements for Archeology series, GS-0193: You must meet one of the basic requirements listed below to be eligible for further consideration.
Education - Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher that included 3 semester hours of each of the following course areas: History of Archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques);AND Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); or surveying. You must include transcripts.

Related Curriculum: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school).You must include transcripts.

Combination of Education and Experience - A combination of education and experience that provides knowledge equivalent to that described in above, plus appropriate additional education or technical experience to total 4 years. This combination demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts.

Experience - Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience includes archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience includes a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-level archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. You must include hours per week worked.

You must meet the requirements of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology. Secretary's Standards--Qualifications Standards (nps.gov) THESE PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS ARE DEFINED AS: The minimum professional qualifications in archeology are a professional graduate degree in archeology, anthropology or a closely related field PLUS at least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management; AND at least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology AND demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
In addition to meeting the requirements above, you must meet one of the following minimum qualifications to be qualified at the GS-09 grade level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: applying the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of archeology to the conduct of prehistoric and historic archeological field investigations and cultural resource projects in the American West which included the preparation of survey reports, site recording forms, site maps, overlays, field notes, and using GPS and GIS. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's Degree or completion of all requirements for a Masters or equivalent graduate degree. To be qualifying, graduate study must have been in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field. The total education offered to meet this provision must have provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the work of this position. To receive credit, you should describe how the specific course work, research projects, dissertation, theses, etc. demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of this position. (Eighteen semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study is considered to be equal to one full year of graduate education.). You must include transcripts.
