VHB is seeking an entry-level Archaeologist to support our Atlanta based Environmental Services Group.
Well-qualified candidates will have experience conducting Phase I and II archaeological surveys throughout the southeastern United States. Well-qualified candidates will also possess a fundamental understanding of the Section 106 process, archaeological site significance (Criterion D), and a general understanding of the prehistoric and historic cultures of the Southeast.
Responsibilities:
Conduct Phase I and Phase II archaeological field surveys and monitoring
Prepare technical reports which assess archaeological site significance under Criterion D of the National Register of Historic Places
Prepare field survey and geographic maps using the ESRI suite of software
Provides artifact analysis and assists curation efforts
Conducts archival and historical background research
Supervise technical staff
Provide support and technical assistance with senior and mid-level staff
Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units/Collector and ArcGIS online (AGOL)
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
Member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA), or qualified archaeologist under the Secretary of the Interior guidelines
Minimum of 3 years experience conducting and leading archaeological surveys
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, and ESRI software (Arcmap and AGOL)
Ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
Valid driver’s license
OSHA 10 preferred
Ideal Skills and Experience
1-2 years of field supervisory experience in the southeastern United States
Familiarity working with FHWA NEPA compliance and state DOTs
Familiarity with NEPA, ARPA, NHPA, NAGPRA
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Team oriented with strong capability to work independently and as part of a group
