This position exists primarily to provide archaeological and cultural heritage advice, grant project management, applications advice and recommendations and engagement with Colorado communities. The person in this position will engage with a range of Colorado communities, particularly indigenous, about potential funding for archaeological and cultural heritage projects in line with History Colorado’s and the State Historical Fund’s grounding virtues and mission. The advisory service provides applications assistance and engagement to organizations and public entities interested in applying to the State Historical Fund for grants related to archaeology, place-based cultural heritage and tribal endeavors. This position also manages a portfolio of archaeological and cultural heritage grants and deliverables. The person in this position is expected to seek professional development opportunities for the benefit of themselves and the organization.
Community Engagement and Communications
Continuing to develop guidance for archaeology and cultural heritage projects with internal and external partners.
Seeking opportunities to travel to and be present in a diverse range of Colorado communities, and advance History Colorado’s Grounding Virtues (Download PDF reader).
Representing History Colorado’s State Historical Fund at public events and communicate our core mission, values and goals with respect to archaeology and cultural heritage.
Communicating accurate knowledge of current History Colorado’s State Historical Fund policies and where alternative/additional funding sources might exist to compliment a project.
Producing content for publication and education on History Colorado’s State Historical Fund approaches to archaeology and cultural heritage.
Engaging Tribal communities through the Colorado Council on Indian Affairs and the state’s Tribal Historic Preservation Offices as the main point of contact, as well as Cultural Resource Management firms, and the general public about our program’s missions, values and goals, and how they can access our funding.
Seeking ways to engage with external and internal partners in our work.
Application Services
Answering funding/application inquiries both written and verbally from the public.
Reviewing and provide constructive criticism to grant applicants.
Visiting applicants on site to discuss potential projects and applications.
Assisting the Outreach unit with inquiries for all types of projects where required.
Providing professional comments in review of the submitted grant application drafts.
Providing professional comments in review of the submitted grant applications for review meetings.
Communicating award decisions and providing professional comments and advice to applicants during declination communication and reapplications.
Overseeing the non-competitive Archaeological Assessment applications.
Choosing and securing specialist and community-based volunteer grant readers both within and outside History Colorado.
Liaising with Section 106 and other OAHP staff over grants that may be under their purview.
Project Management
Managing all Archaeological and Education grants awarded including developing deliverables, monitoring. project progress, and coaching grant recipients to succeed.
Providing review of archaeological deliverables for other staff members.
Helping the CLG coordinator review archaeological deliverables as requested.
Understanding and communicating the policy requirements of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.
Professional Development
Reviewing basic historic preservation literature, periodicals and journals to remain knowledgeable in the field.
Pursuing educational and hands-on training opportunities related to historic preservation and SHF.
Sharing knowledge with other SHF staff and professional colleagues.
Maintaining active participation in allied organizations.
Works with volunteers and interns.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
This position requires a Master’s Degree in Archaeology or related discipline.
Experience in historic preservation is essential; experience of customer service is preferred. Must have excellent planning, program management, organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as strong written and oral communication skills.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in tribal consultation, and working with BIPOC communities.
Must demonstrate experience working on archaeological projects and interpreting the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.
Must be able to think strategically, and see and understand the needs of the institution as a whole.
This position requires independent travel throughout the state and occasional overnight stays.
Previous experience with grant making is not required, but is highly desirable.
