This position is located within the Restoration Services Branch of the Historic Preservation Office (HPO).  The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate and provide technical restoration services to the public in four major program areas relating to the preservation and rehabilitation of historic structures in North Carolina. Therefore, this position requires the incumbent to have good verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to work well with the public.
Key Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Management of the state historic preservation tax credit program for non-income-producing structures including advocacy and outreach;
Assistance with administration of the federal historic preservation tax credit program;
Provide historic preservation services to constituents in assigned counties; 
Applying the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation to a wide range of historic structures and projects;
Technical restoration and preservation assistance or consultations for preservation and landmark commissions as well as private property owners, non-profit museums, and local governments;
Provide technical assistance to recipients of federal and state historic preservation related grants;
Review of federal projects that affect historic structures; 
Review of state-funded and state-owned projects that affect historic properties; 
Preparing and giving presentations on a variety of historic preservation and restoration topics; and
Promoting a strong historic preservation philosophy to all North Carolinians including constituents, developers, organizations, government officials, and colleagues.

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office assists private citizens, private institutions, local governments, and agencies of state and federal government in the identification, evaluation, protection, and enhancement of properties significant in North Carolina history and archaeology. The agency carries out state and federal preservation programs and is a section within the Division of Historical Resources.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must provide the information on the application form. Must have knowledge of American architectural history;
Must have working knowledge of building preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, construction technology, and construction history;
Must have a valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment; and
Must be willing to travel for day and occasional over-night trips.
 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's degree in historic preservation, planning, architectural history, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in historic preservation;
or
Bachelor's degree in history, planning, or architectural history, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in historic preservation;
or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Please note that internships and teaching/graduate assistant-ships may be counted as experience as long as the work performed is directly relevant to the position.
