The Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) seeks five (5) archaeological field technicians for the multi-year excavation of the cemetery associated with the original Mississippi State Insane Asylum. This cemetery is located on the UMMC campus and contains the unmarked graves of over 4,000 individuals who will be moved to make room for vital expansion. The Asylum Hill Project will permanently memorialize the interred individuals during a later phase.
This is a 12mo/year project taking approximately 4 to 7 years to complete. Selected technicians will be expected to move to Jackson, MS, as there is no per diem or housing provided for this project. The work schedule will be five-day, 40-hour weeks. Lab work will be provided when inclement weather prevents fieldwork.

Hourly pay will be $18.00-21.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Benefits provided include health insurance, earned paid time off, and optional retirement withholdings with match.
Fieldwork is projected to begin in late September.

Qualified candidates should have the following:

Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field plus a minimum of one year archaeological field experience, or at least 5 years of archaeological field experience in lieu of education
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in harsh weather conditions (Mississippi summers)
Ability to maintain the highest ethical standards and cultural sensitivity concerning human remains
Ability to perform work to the highest safety standards
Ability to work as a cohesive team for a multi-year project

Preferred qualifications include:

Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and 5 years of field experience or 7+ years archaeological field experience
Previous historic-period burial excavation experience
Knowledge of human osteology
Experience with TotalStation mapping
Experience with field photography

This position requires that candidates:

Stoop, bend, kneel, walk over uneven terrain, and lift and carry weight of up to 40 lbs.
Perform tasks requiring gross manipulation (use of hand tools) and fine manipulation (use of touch-screen devices)
Adhere to project health and safety plans
Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, as well as a good attitude and strong work ethic
Demonstrate the utmost respect for the excavated individuals and their living descendants
Excavate burials with a combination of CRM speed and academic precision
