This position is located in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, Chaco Culture, National Historical Park (NHP). The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a cultural resources specialist for one or more parks where archeological resources comprise a major part of the park story. The park may be one where archeological resources are predominant, or where natural resources are predominant but where significant archeological resources are present.
Duties
Serve as a principle assistant for planning, programming, and executing the completion of cultural resource management tasks.
Give advice on and coordinate environmental compliance to assure an organization meets or exceeds legal or professional laws and standards.
Assist higher-graded staff with cultural resources program management activities; including archeology, historic preservation, curation, and research.
Participate, as a team member, in preparing resource management plans and environmental assessment documents that identify special cultural resource considerations, and/or potential impacts to cultural resources.
Prepare preservation documentation, compliance, and/or background materials for clearances, permits, planning and construction projects that involve cultural resources.Requirements

Qualifications
This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. Selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks per year based on project requirements or weather conditions.
In order to qualify, applicants must demonstrate that they meet the Basic and Minimum Qualification Requirement as noted below. Basic Requirement:
A. Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school.
OR
B. Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A ABOVE (including archeological field school).
OR
C. Have a combination of education and experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
OR
D. Have four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-graded archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
Minimum Qualification Requirement, GS-09:
Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, applicants must have one (1) full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) Providing archeological data for management decisions requiring archeological input, reconstruction, restoration and/or stabilization work on archeological sites and structures; (2) Determining the location and extent of resources; preparation and completion of cultural and archeological segments of management plans and/or the development and updating of interpretive themes (3) Utilizing results of research to provide technical advice to park managers regarding the full scope of cultural resources; and (4) Communicating technical information to professional and nonprofessional audiences orally and in writing.

Education: Have successfully completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, in a field that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to conduct the work of this position such as Archeology, Anthropology, etc.
OR
Combination of Education/Experience: Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above. (To calculate, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 18 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify).
