Position Description
This Environmental Specialist position is part of the Archeological Studies Branch. As an Environmental Specialist, you’ll manage archeological compliance for TxDOT projects, oversee consultant work, manage archeological projects as part of the overall environmental process, and contribute to TxDOT’s consultation and outreach programs. You must be eligible to obtain Texas Antiquities Permits from the Texas Historical Commission. TxDOT projects occur all over the state and encounter a diverse array of resources. Because of the size of the program, you will have the opportunity to contribute to projects that make use of your existing expertise and to grow in new ways. TxDOT supports professional development through on-the-job experiences, conference participation, and formal training.
TxDOT projects require compliance with the Antiquities Code of Texas, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and the Texas Health and Safety Code. To achieve compliance with these and other requirements, TxDOT utilizes a variety of tools and resources. For example, TxDOT has developed a series of models indicating the portions of the landscape with the best potential to preserve archeological sites. TxDOT manages multiple consulting firms with expertise in the protection of cultural resources. TxDOT oversees many data recovery and other mitigation projects.
