About the opportunity
SWCA is looking for a Project Archaeologist who will act as a Field Director, based out of our Bismarck North Dakota office to assist with a variety of projects in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and possibly other states. Project work will likely include pedestrian surveys and may include construction monitoring, data recovery, or other field tasks. You will lead crews in identifying cultural materials, collecting data with tablets, recording sites using state-specific protocols, and making National Register of Historic Places evaluations. You will coordinate with the Project Manager daily, planning and coordinating fieldwork. This is a full-time, hourly position. A typical schedule for summer work is 10 days on, 4 days off, with longer mobilizations necessary at times. Along with an hourly pay rate you are also eligible for $59 per diem, paid sick time accrual, and single-occupancy lodging for non-local projects.
This position will be based in the northern Plains (especially in Minnesota or North Dakota) and can be remote.

What you will accomplish

Direct cultural resource field crews to complete fieldwork safely and efficiently.
Perform fieldwork (survey, testing, archaeological monitoring, or data recovery) and assist Project Managers and Principal Investigators with cultural resources tasks.
Coordinate land access, field crew progress, and daily data transfer and management.
Prepare and review site forms.
Effectively communicate and support teamwork across multiple disciplines, both internally and externally.
Collect, perform QA/QC, organize, and track field data.
Implement, enforce, and document SWCA’s safety standards for yourself and your crew. Conduct morning tailgate safety and coordination meetings.
Always maintain a high level of professionalism.
Demonstrate and maintain SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance, and have the awareness to identify and resolve challenges in creative ways
Manage and maintain field equipment.
Ensure that field crews are prepared for field activities.
Possibly conduct technical reporting, including Phase I, II and III (Class I, II and III) archaeological reports and all associated documentation and data forms, depending on workload.

Experience and qualifications for success

A bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
Experience working in the Dakotas or Minnesota is preferred.
A minimum of 3 years of cultural resource management experience is preferred.
A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is preferred.
Ability to be listed on state and federal permits is preferred.
Strong leadership and supervision abilities, including problem solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making.
Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and analytical skills.
Team player with strong ability take initiative and solve problems using sound judgment.
Must have strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrate ability to coordinate effectively with SWCA senior staff and other project personnel.
Knowledge of Esri software is preferred.
Availability to work extended field rotations (10-12 days at a time) and travel accordingly.
Current valid driver’s license is required.
The ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads is required.
Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours and extended periods, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
