Job Description

PaleoWest is hiring a Field Director to support our Bay Area office. This is a full-time, hourly position with competitive wages and benefits. Under the supervision of a Bay Area Team Lead, Principal Investigator, and Project Managers, the Field Director will oversee and lead archaeological crews in all manner of fieldwork, including pedestrian surveys, testing/data recovery projects, and construction monitoring. This position also entails office work, including technical writing related to pre- and post-field activities. Travel throughout northern California is expected and opportunities to work in other regions (e.g., Pacific Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, etc.) is possible. This position offers support for job training, a positive and diverse work environment, and colleagues who are supportive, passionate, and collectively focused on work/life balance and producing high-quality CRM documents.

Skills and Responsibilities

An ideal PaleoWest Field Director can follow and communicate instructions and can work independently and as a team member in and out of the field. An ideal candidate can:

 	
Demonstrate knowledge of California’s Pre-Contact and historic period archaeological record
 	
Demonstrate expertise in archaeological field methods and data collection
 	
Possess leadership skills/traits in the field
 	
Demonstrate excellent attention to detail, a positive work ethic, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment
 	
Demonstrate strong organizational skills with task and time management
 	
Demonstrate familiarity with GPS and GIS data collection in the field; experience with ArcCollector, Field Maps, and/or Codifi is a plus
 	
Have excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated experience in technical writing, data entry, and organization
 	
Exhibit positive and respectful behavior toward Native American representatives
 	
Exemplify professionalism
 	
Observe and uphold PaleoWest’s Fieldwork Procedures and Health and Safety requirements
 	
Be able to endure adverse environmental conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, precipitation, and challenging terrain for sustained durations
 	
Be capable of walking several miles daily, over all types of terrain, and be able to excavate in a variety of conditions
 	
Work with PaleoWest Bay Area Team Lead, Principal Investigators, Project Managers, and other staff to implement project specific instructions and methods
 	
Be willing to travel and stay overnight on short and long term projects

Qualifications

An ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

 	
Can be permitted as a Field Director in California on BLM Cultural Resource Use Permits and ARPA permits
 	
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or willingness to get vaccinated prior to date of hire is required for all employees, unless a valid religious or medical waiver is in place

And

 	
A bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field with at least 10+ years of professional archaeological experience in California including 2+ years of demonstrated experience directing archaeological crews in the Bay Area.

OR

 	
An advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field with at least 5+ years of professional archaeological experience in the California, including 2+ years of demonstrated experience directing archaeological crews in the Bay Area.
