Qualifications

This position has a Basic Education Requirement (BER) which can be satisfied by meeting one of the following:
For the Archaeologist (0193 series): Have a degree in archeology or a related discipline that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: history of archeology; archeology of a major geographical area; regional archeology; theory and methods of archeology; AND an archeological field school; AND 6 semester hours of courses in geography, geology, or cultural geography; history; historiography or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing and/or surveying, OR have a degree in anthropology, history, American studies, or a related discipline that included academic course work similar to that stated above including an archeological field school; OR have a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in archeology or related disciplines appropriate to the position advertised; OR have four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology AND included archeology field experience equivalent to archeological field school.
For the Geologist (1350 series): Have a degree in geology, which included or was supplemented by 20 semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography; OR have a combination of education and experience — course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
At the GS-12 Level: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience working in a Natural Resource environment assisting in the preparation of land use plans, interdisciplinary activity plans and/or ecosystem plans; leads and/or coaches individuals in planning and organizing management objectives; communicate effectively to a variety of audiences.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The incumbent’s work primarily takes place in an office setting with some time spent in the field as needed. Office work has no special physical requirements but is mentally demanding. Field work may involve arduous walking and climbing in a variety of terrain, from flat to steep, rocky, and mountainous. Field work often requires operation of 4X4 vehicles and/or Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) to reach work sites.
Work Environment: Office work takes place in an adequately lighted and heated indoor environment that requires no special safety precautions. Field work can involve driving long distances on unpaved roads and is carried out under various weather conditions, including temperatures that may range from 20 to 105° F. The incumbent may encounter poisonous insects, plants, or snakes while in the field. The incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations and use of Personnel Protective Equipment as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
Education
This position can fall under the Archeologist or Geologist, 0193/1350 Professional and Scientific Positions. There are Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for these job series, BER see Qualifications section.
This position has a positive education requirement (see qualification section for education requirements). You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
All selections and tentative offers of selection are contingent upon submission and verification of ‘official’ transcripts.
There is no substitution of education for experience at this grade level.
